Why Book a Tangier Shore Excursion?

Tangier is famous for its layered history, colorful medina and legendary cafés, but navigating it efficiently in a few hours takes local know-how. Here is why a shore excursion is the smartest way to see Tangier from a cruise:

Arriving at Tanger Ville Cruise Port

Tangier’s cruise terminal, Tanger Ville, sits right at the edge of the city center. Ships dock directly at the pier — no tenders needed. From the terminal it is a 10 to 15 minute walk to the entrance of the Medina, and taxis and tour operators wait just outside for those heading further afield.

The newly developed port area features a marina, cafés and shops, so there is even a comfortable place to grab a mint tea before your tour begins. Most Tangier shore excursions pick you up steps from where you disembark.

The Best Tangier Shore Excursions

There is a Tangier shore excursion for every traveler. Here are the most popular options cruise passengers love.

Classic City & Coast Tour (Half Day)

The most popular option, this combines the historic heart of Tangier with its spectacular coastline:

This classic route lasts about 4 to 5 hours and is the perfect choice for most port calls.

Chefchaouen, the Blue City (Full Day)

Chefchaouen is the most photographed town in Morocco, with its blue-washed streets nestled in the Rif Mountains. A full-day shore excursion from Tangier takes you there and back with time to explore the medina, the Kasbah and the artisan shops.

Because Chefchaouen is about two hours each way, this tour suits ships with a longer stop — around 8 hours in port. It is a long but unforgettable day.

Asilah, the Coastal Art Town (Half or Full Day)

About 45 minutes south of the port, Asilah charms visitors with its whitewashed houses, painted murals and relaxed seaside promenade. It is a gentle, low-stress excursion that pairs beautifully with the classic city tour or a seafood lunch by the ocean.

Tetouan & the Rif Mountains (Full Day)

For travelers who want to go deeper into northern Morocco, Tetouan’s UNESCO-listed medina offers some of the most authentic Andalusian-influenced architecture in the country. Combined with a scenic drive through the Rif foothills, this is a rewarding Tangier shore excursion for culture lovers.

Tangier Food & Culture Tour (Half Day)

Sip mint tea, sample Moroccan pastries and seafood, and wander through the markets with a local guide. A food-focused tour is a delicious way to experience the city, and it fits comfortably into a half-day port call.

Full Day in Port (6-8 Hours)

DIY vs. Guided Shore Excursion

You can absolutely explore Tangier on your own — the port is walkable and the city is safe. However, a guided shore excursion from Tangier saves time, adds context and removes the stress of finding your way back to the ship. If you do go solo, agree on taxi fares in advance, carry small notes, and give yourself plenty of time to return to the port.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

Whether you choose the classic city and coast tour, a full day in the Blue City of Chefchaouen, or a relaxed afternoon in Asilah, this fascinating gateway between Europe and Africa will leave you wanting more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Tangier shore excursions?

The best Tangier shore excursions combine the city with the coast. A classic half-day tour covers the Kasbah, the Medina and Grand Socco, then continues to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, often finishing with a camel ride on the beach. For a full day, add the Blue City of Chefchaouen, the coastal art town of Asilah or the UNESCO medina of Tetouan.

How far is the Tangier cruise port from the medina?

Cruise ships dock at Tanger Ville port, right on the edge of the city center. The entrance to the historic Medina is only a 10 to 15 minute walk from the cruise terminal, and most top attractions are within a short drive. No tenders or shuttles are needed, which makes Tangier one of the easiest ports to explore.

Can you visit Chefchaouen on a shore excursion from Tangier?

Yes, but it is a long day. Chefchaouen is about two hours from the port each way through the Rif Mountains, so the round trip takes around four hours of driving. It works best for ships with a longer port call (8 hours or more). If your time is short, choose the classic city and coast tour instead.

Do I need a visa for a Tangier shore excursion?

Most cruise passengers do not need a visa for Morocco. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, the EU and many other countries can enter Morocco visa-free for short stays. Always check the latest entry requirements with your cruise line or embassy before you travel, and carry your passport with you when you go ashore.

What our travelers say

Reviews from TripAdvisor

The best tour guide you'll find!

I don't normally give reviews let alone 5 star ones but Hassan and his team have gone so far above my expectations from a tour company I thought they more then deserved it. As a Solo traveler I was or course concerned about safety. So what made me go with them? Morocco amazing destinations was responsive on the phone transparent and fair with their prices, but it was more than that. They gave me traveling tips and we're always a phone call away if I had a question or needed a place to stay. Unfortunately the first few days of my trip I was sick I wasn't feeling well enough to start the tour when I communicated this to the company their primary concern was me feeling better and enjoying my trip and they didn't even ask for a compensation fee even though they had driven all the way out there. I was really touched by this and called them a couple days later to continue the tour. The tour guide takes you in like one of his family showing you his home his community and tradition. Something I can say as an American we don't really have an abundance. The openness of the people to share what they have connect to you and how they live with one another was really an experience for me. If any of what I'm saying speaks to you book your tour with them and no further for a good experience in Morocco.

Do you want Quality Service? Would you like to feel welcomed? Choose this company, you won't be disappointed 🙏🏾🫶🏾

If I could rate this company with 20 stars that would not be enough!!! From the moment we arrived they treated us with so much respect and you can tell they take pride in the service they provide. Hamid my expert driver and friend was nothing short of extraordinary. His attention to detail and character blew me away. I found myself getting emotional any time he would go above and beyond to ensure my comfortability. Hamid I cannot thank you enough, you my friend are something special. To your boss Hassan, thank you for pairing me with this talented young man. We will be back God willing in July but ONLY if Hamid will accommodate us. I will name my son after him - The real Fatimah

Spectacular experience 100% recommended

The service of our guide Hassan has been excellent. At all times we have felt accompanied by him, feeling him as a friend who has made the journey with us and who has transmitted to us the passion for his work, his country, his people and especially his Berber culture.
